Testimonial

One of my students sent in a very nice testimonial that i’d like to share, thanks.

Ros Langford

I was a recreational painter who in my retirement had attended classes mostly structured around watercolour demonstrations and practice. I had got to the stage where I felt I wasn’t really being challenged. On the recommendation of a friend I attended one of Clare Lord’s Life Drawing days.

Clare’s supportive, friendly, relaxed and positive teaching style is both encouraging and empowering and I really felt I had received worthwhile tuition. So I signed-up for her weekly classes and study days. A ready mix of encouragement, guidance and challenge flows throughout the sessions allowing everyone to achieve a result that they are truly happy with. The studio in which we work is clean and orderly, warm and pleasant with good natural lighting.

In the last year I feel I have really stretched myself and learnt so many new things to do with drawing and painting. We have reflected on work by past masters and related these to our studies of still life; been encouraged to consider the negative spaces in our life drawings and worked on special foci such as line, tone, perspective, preparation – mixing paints and creating colour charts with a paint mix index.

Coming from a background of acrylics and some watercolour, oil painting was untried by me and Clare has guided and supported me through my introduction to and development of my techniques with this medium, and it has now become my preferred style. I really feel progression in my own confidence and ability using oils, and now have a more planned and structured approach.

First of all Clare encouraged me to paint ‘big’. Now I use much bigger brushes, and much larger canvases. Clare has even organised a session where we were taught how to construct our own canvases, which are of a much better quality than we were using. She has also given us lots of good advice on where and what supplies to purchase.

I have learnt so much about the paints; – applying dark tones first, and how to angle the brush and think about the start and end of my brush strokes. One of the nicest features I have found is how well you can blend colours and create wonderful gradations of colour and tonality. Clare has instilled in me the need for simple yet obvious things such as regularly standing back to look at my painting and assess which areas ‘jump out at you’ and need to be worked-on next. The sessions are a nice blend of theory and practice. I have learned so much in the last year and half. My family are really impressed at the quality of work I am now producing, and I am being encouraged to exhibit my paintings. Something I am working towards.
